HISTORY

The Pleiades Pathfinder Club of the New Haven Seventh-Day Adventist Church began in 1974 under the directorship of Brother Derrick Cameron. In the late 1970’s the club’s name was changed from Melford to Pleiades - a tiny constellation meaning Seven Sisters since Melford had no significance. Over its 25 years of existence, the club has become well-known and has gained respect as a result of its many significant achievements. In the early years, the club was renowned for drilling, winning every competition that it entered. Craftwork and string art, shell sand, and stone craft were also of the highest quality.

In the late 1980’s the Pleiades Pathfinder’s Club acquired its own set of drums. This accomplishment and blessing set the Club apart as the first Pathfinder Club in Jamaica to obtain its drum corp equipment. The Club is one of the most active in the East Jamaica Conference and it participated in numerous outreach activities island-wide such as anti-drug marches, pre-crusade road marches, and playouts for other functions and activities.

In 1994 the Club hosted its first one-week crusade which culminated in the baptism of several precious souls. Throughout the years the Club has engaged in numerous outdoor activities such as hikes, cookouts swimming, and camping. To date, the club has had 13 directors: Sister Narr, Derrick Cameron, Herbert Martin, Renford Taylor, Hopeton Wellington, Toussaint James, Nadene Jones, Jennifer Morris, Donavon Gibson, Courtney Berry, Maurice Cooper, Sisters Yvette Castell, and at present Tameko Smith. The Club has a very vibrant and supportive Parent Pathfinder Association which has assisted greatly in the growth of the club throughout the years.

Adventurer Club

The Adventurer Club is designed to strengthen parent-child relationships for kids ages 6-9 by providing specialized weekly activities tuned into the psychological needs of this age group while simultaneously giving parents opportunities to learn parenting skills and enjoy special activities with their children.

Adventurer PLEDGE: "Because Jesus loves me, I can always do my best."

Adventurer LAW: Be obedient; Be pure; Be true; Be kind; Be respectful; Be attentive; Be helpful; Be cheerful; Be thoughtful; Be reverent

Pathfinder Club

For those who are familiar with it, “Pathfindering” conjures up images of marching, camping, curious hobbies, bugs, and bats. Enlarging their windows on the world and building a relationship with God are the dual objectives of this club, which is designed for children ages 10-15. This Seventh-day Adventist Church-sponsored club accepts any youth who promises to abide by the Pathfinder's Pledge and Law regardless of their church affiliation.

Pathfinder AIM: The Advent Message to the Entire World in My Generation.

Pathfinder MOTTO: "The love of Christ compels us."

Pathfinder PLEDGE: By the grace of God, I will be pure and kind and true. I will keep the Pathfinder's Law. I will be a servant of God and a friend to man.

Pathfinder LAW: The Pathfinder Law is for me to: Keep the morning watch. Do my honest part. Care for my body. Keep a level eye. Be courteous and obedient. Walk softly in the sanctuary. Keep a song in my heart. Go on God's errands.
